Kardinia Park Geelong, also known as Simonds Stadium, is the official training facility and home ground of the Geelong Cats.
WT has been involved in various stages of the works to upgrade the stadium and establish its reputation as one of the best boutique stadiums in Australia. WT provided full Quantity Surveying services for Stages 1 and 3, and we are currently working on Stage 4.
Stage 1, which commenced in 2004, consisted of a new 5 level grandstand designed to hold about 6500 spectators, corporate entertainment facilities, players facilities and coaches boxes. Central to the design is the use of large steel curved columns which support not only the roof but the floor level loads. The cantilevered roof was pre-assembled are lifted into place with a 200 tonne crane.
We also provided post contract financial management for the Stage 3 Redevelopment project which aimed to increase the ground’s crowd capacity to 34,500 and broaden the range of sports and community activities the stadium can host. Stage 3 works included the demolition of the old Doug Wade stand and the construction of a new 9,000 (approx.) seat Southern Grandstand. The new grandstand also includes:
- Improved spectator amenities
- A Community Wellness and Education Centre – a purpose built training facility for community sporting groups
- A new ‘Past Players’ room
Constructed concurrently to the Grandstand were five new light towers which allow night AFL and cricket matches to be hosted. We provided full quantity surveying services to the light tower construction project.
The Stage 4 redevelopment began with the demolition of the Brownlow Stand in October 2015, and is due for completion in May 2017.
Popoulous were the architects who completed the design of all stages. Kane Constructions delivered Stages 1 and 3, including the award winning Simonds Stadium Players Stand and Light Towers and is also currently engaged on Stage 4.
This contemporary multi-use venue that provides a proud legacy to the Geelong Football Club, and also to the broader Geelong Community.
