Located at the intersection of Collins Street and Bourke Street, the new Docklands Library and Community Centre development is a three storey resource for Docklands residents.
The intention was to provide a cultural hub for the community, beyond a traditional library space by utilising wireless, satellite and tablet technology platforms and offering function and performance spaces multi-purpose meeting rooms, outdoor reading area and exhibition spaces.
Library at the Dock also sets a new standard for sustainable practice, being the first six star Green Star rated building. It was constructed atop a 100 year old timber wharf requiring the innovative use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) for structural and cladding elements. CLT delivers a viable alternative to concrete and steel that can withstand similar loadings to prefabricated concrete, but requires less foundation, cutting construction time by as much as a third.
WT provided full quantity surveying services for the project, which won the Property Council of Australia’s development of the year award in Victoria .
