To improve traffic flows between Canberra City, Parliament House and Canberra Airport the old Kings Avenue / Parkes Way roundabout required replacement with a new overpass.

Parkes Way was lowered and a new bridge constructed to carry Kings Avenue traffic at its existing level over Parkes Way. The new intersection improves traffic movements in all directions and improves the safety of pedestrian movement to and from Russell. On-road bicycle lanes are also included on the new section of Parkes Way and the northern section of Kings Avenue.

The design of the new intersection reinforces the vista between Parliament House and Russell and better defines the eastern side of the Parliamentary Triangle. The overpass is a landmark and ‘gateway’ to central Canberra and meets the needs of visitors and residents well into the future.

WT worked as part of the design team headed by the Landscape Architect providing pre contract cost planning advice, production of a Builder’s Bill of Quantities, a pre tender estimate and post contract cost administration.

The works were completed under budget, on time and won the Engineers Australia Canberra Division 2011 Engineering Excellence Award.
