WT celebrates completion of new Sydney Fish Market

Leading international project advisory firm WT is celebrating a major milestone in one of New South Wales’ most significant public infrastructure projects, with the opening of the new Sydney Fish Market on 19 January 2026.

Located on the edge of Blackwattle Bay, the world-class redevelopment delivers a modern market precinct that doubles retail space, introduces a diverse mix of dining options, and offers expansive waterfront views. The project also provides 6,000 square metres of accessible public open space and features five creative installations that acknowledge First Nations heritage and the site’s industrial past.

Combining complex engineering with state-of-the-art facilities, the new Sydney Fish Market sets a new benchmark for contemporary market design and reshapes Sydney’s harbour skyline. The building’s striking form features a transparent façade and an iconic roof composed of pyramid-shaped elements designed to emulate fish scales, incorporating integrated solar panels.

“We’re very excited to have contributed to a project of this scale and profile,” said Nic Mills, WT State Director and Independent Certifier Lead.

“It’s a highly technical and challenging building, and from a services perspective, the scale and complexity have made it an exceptional project to be part of.”

Independent Commissioning Agent

WT was engaged by Infrastructure NSW as Independent Commissioning Agent (ICA), collaborating with Multiplex, subcontractors and key stakeholders to deliver world-class building services. As ICA, the firm verified that building services were thoroughly tested and commissioned to ensure that the facility operated as per its design.

As a fully operational fish market, the project required carefully planned and highly specialised systems. WT’s team worked closely with building services subcontractors to plan, review, test and sign off works from design through to installation, witnessing testing and final building tuning. This included oversight of central cooling, mechanical refrigeration and ice-making systems, heating, hydraulics and hot water distribution, lighting, electrical systems, fire services and the building management system.

Independent Certifier

WT also engaged by Infrastructure NSW, Multiplex and Sydney Fish Market as Independent Certifier. In this role, WT provided stakeholders with confidence that contractual obligations were met and that compliance processes were applied rigorously, transparently and consistently throughout all stages of the project.

Last November, WT issued the Certificate of Practical Completion, formally handing over the new facility to the NSW Government and enabling access for Sydney Fish Market as the tenant operator

Sustainability and long-term performance

The project is targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s framework, supporting the NSW Government’s net zero 2050 commitment. WT helped realise this sustainability vision by ensuring energy-efficient systems were integrated and tested, renewable energy use was maximised, water-saving strategies were embedded, and materials met low environmental impact requirements.

WT’s independent commissioning management expertise helps clients achieve the best possible performance and efficiency across all building services in new or existing buildings, going beyond ‘ticking the boxes’ to unlock sustainable value. As an ICA, WT provides an unbiased perspective of the commissioning process and a ‘soft landing’ to protect clients’ interests, ensuring assets live up to their full potential to attract savvy investors, purchasers and tenants.
