With demand for high-quality community and elite sports infrastructure on the rise, the Victorian Government committed $132 million and Knox City Council committed a further $2 million to upgrade the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South.
The redevelopment transformed the facility into a national sporting hub, adding 12 new indoor courts to the existing six courts, upgraded show courts and high-performance courts, new elite-level training and recovery facilities, and dedicated gymnastics spaces. The project also delivered administrative headquarters for key basketball organisations including Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria, South East Melbourne Phoenix, the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, and Knox Basketball Inc.
Creating sustainable value through expert quantity surveying
WT was engaged by Development Victoria in 2019 to provide cost management and quantity surveying services throughout the delivery of the project. Our team worked closely with the client and project stakeholders to ensure the upgraded centre delivered maximum value for investment, supporting long-term sporting outcomes and community access.
We provided detailed cost planning, risk analysis and procurement advice to manage the complexities of delivering a high-performance facility for both elite and grassroots sport. During construction, we supported ongoing cost control through variation assessments, progress claims and cashflow forecasting.
We also provided full program development, management and analysis from initial business case and feasibility testing through to construction, with ongoing monitoring and reporting of contractor performance.
A home for athletes, clubs and the wider community
Completed in 2024, the upgraded State Basketball Centre is now one of the leading basketball facilities in Australia that will support the continued growth of basketball and gymnastics at local and elite levels. It provides a new home for professional and community athletes, supports the development of future talent, and enhances access to sport for schools and local clubs.
With its expanded capacity and modern amenities, the centre is also set to host national tournaments, attract major events and provide a lasting boost to Victoria’s sporting economy.
