The iconic Sydney Fish Market has been reimagined with sustainable design, construction and operation at the forefront.
Located on the edge of Blackwattle Bay next to the old Sydney Fish Market site, the new market offers double the retail space, diverse dining options and waterfront views. Combining complex engineering with state-of-the-art facilities, the project sets a new benchmark for contemporary market design and reshapes Sydney’s harbour skyline.
Independent Certifier oversight for delivery excellence
WT was engaged by Infrastructure NSW, Multiplex and Sydney Fish Market as the Independent Certifier. Our role provided all stakeholders with confidence that contract obligations were met and that rigorous compliance processes were followed and carried out methodically and transparently to all stakeholders across all stages.
In November 2025, our team provided the Certificate of Practical Completion, formally handing the new Sydney Fish Market over to the NSW Government who could give access to the Sydney Fish Market as the tenant operator. Final fitouts and testing are underway ahead of the public opening on 19 January 2026.
Commissioning complex and specialised building services
We were also engaged by Infrastructure NSW as the Independent Commissioning Agent to work closely with builders Multiplex, subcontractors and stakeholders to ensure the delivery of world-class building services and facilities.
As a fully operational fish market from catch to consumption, well thought-out and specialised building services had to be considered. With our substantial retail sector experience, we worked closely with a range of building services subcontractors to plan, review, test and sign off work from design through to installation, witness testing and building tuning.
This included overseeing central cooling, mechanical systems of refrigeration and icemaking, heating, hydraulic and hot water distribution systems, lighting, electrical, fire services and building management systems.
Supporting a 5 Star Green Star vision
The new Sydney Fish Market is targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s rating tool, marking a major step toward the NSW Government’s net zero 2050 commitment.
We helped bring the Market’s sustainability vision to life by ensuring energy-efficient systems were integrated and tested, renewable energy use was maximised, water-saving strategies were embedded, and construction materials met low environmental impact requirements. Our commissioning oversight ensured every system performed as intended to meet the Design criteria and Green Star standards.
A world-class harbourside achievement
As the most significant harbourside public building since the Sydney Opera House, the new Sydney Fish Market represents a remarkable feat of sustainable design and complex engineering. We’re proud to have played a role in its delivery, applying our specialist commissioning expertise and independent certification to help realise this project of lasting cultural value.
