Project Description

Client:

Infrastructure NSW

The iconic Sydney Fish Market is being reimagined with sustainable design, construction and operation at the forefront. As Australia’s home of seafood, the NSW Government has injected $750 million of support to boost the tourism and fishing industry. By revitalising Sydney Fish Market’s seafood operations, distribution, retail, dining and public space, visitation is expected to double to over 6 million people per year on completion.

Infrastructure NSW engaged Multiplex as the main works contractor and construction began in 2021. WT was brought on board as both the Independent Certifier and Independent Commissioning Agent to work closely with Multiplex, subcontractors and stakeholders to ensure the delivery of world-class building services and facilities.

Renowned Danish architects 3XN alongside Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios have designed an architectural icon underpinned by sustainability. The floating roof is a key design feature and is a testament to cutting-edge engineering and environmental innovation. The timber structure in a wave form is not only a strong visual link to the site but also provides additional natural light to the market, features solar panels and collects rainwater to be used for irrigation and amenities.

Once complete, the Sydney Fish Market will be a 5 Star Green Star rated building under the Green Building Council of Australia’s rating tool. We’re helping to bring this vision to life by ensuring the Green Star rating requirements are met with energy efficient systems, maximising the use of renewable energy, water efficiency and use of low environmental impact materials.

As a fully operational fish market from catch to consumption, well thought-out and specialised building services had to be considered. With our substantial experience in retail, we are working closely with a range of building services subcontractors to plan, review, test and sign off work from design through to installation and functional tuning. These include overseeing central cooling, mechanical systems of refrigeration and icemaking, heating, hydraulic and hot water distribution systems, lighting, electrical, fire services and building management systems.

Additionally, as the Independent Certifier, we work with all stakeholders to ensure quality procedures and processes are implemented throughout construction, to enable us to certify practical completion across work stages. We provide Infrastructure NSW with confidence that project risks are being identified and addressed, and all contractor obligations are met.

As Sydney’s most significant harbourside building since the Opera House, the Sydney Fish Market is an exciting project to showcase our sustainable commissioning and project certification expertise.
