In preparation for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2007 FINA World Championships, the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre required the addition of a new competition class 50 m outdoor swimming pool with seating capacity for 10,000 spectators.

The new facilities include:

  • A 50 metre outdoor competition pool (permanently roofed)
  • A Sports House for sporting organisations, including the Melbourne School of Sport and Recreation Management;
  • An additional pool for hydrotherapy;
  • Change rooms and ancillary facilities;
  • A multi storey car park for approximately 300 cars;
  • A permanent 3,000 seat grandstand with capacity for up to 10,000 seats in event mode.

The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre hosted table tennis, squash, diving and swimming programs at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

In 2008, the outdoor pool was upgraded and became the world’s first 50 m swimming pool with a moveable floor.
